Delta AFA Voting Results: 53 Vote Discrepancy = "Fuzzy Math" Seems a bit odd to me that AFA's Pat Friend is sending out an e-mail saying:
In the end, 40 percent, 5,306 of the 13,382 Delta flight Attendants eligible to vote, overcame these obstacles and cast their votes for AFA-CWA representation.
Yet in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, these facts were reported,
5,253 of 13,380 eligible voters cast "yes" ballots, well short of the majority required, the National Mediation Board said. Employees who don't vote are counted as "no" votes. A total of 5,306 ballots were cast.
While it may seem nit-picky, I expect honest communication from my union. When there starts to be this type of "fuzzy math" applied to how we, the dues paying members, are being communicated to, it makes me wonder what other things are having this type of "fuzzy math" applied to it. Things like contract ratification votes and other referendums come to mind where 53 votes can make a big difference in the outcome that will affect us all for years to come.
Also, looking forward, AFA seems to be expecting every NWA flight attendant to vote for them in the upcoming merger-triggered representational election. From what I'm hearing on the line, there are several flight attendants who want union representation, but they sure as heck think what we're getting from AFA is not worth voting for. Another thing I'm hearing is that we'll no longer be up against NWA management (who are being shown the door by Delta). If the recent raise given to the Delta employees is any indication of how they will be treating us, there seems to be some question if the "fuzzy math" representation we are currently getting from AFA is worth voting for.
My guess is AFA will suddenly start paying attention to the issues that matter to us now that they have lost the Delta campaign. Maybe I'll be wrong and all we will hear about it how scary things will be if we don't vote them in. I only hope they start by telling the truth in every detail that they communicate instead of trying to gloss over their obvious lack of truly representing the best interests of all NWA flight attendants. Not just those that hold some sort of office in AFA.
