Mixed signals about Delta-Northwest merger negotiations over the past 48 hours appeared to be a sign of pilots union brinkmanship rather than a doomed deal, industry experts and insiders say. ATLANTA: An impasse among pilot negotiators over blending seniority lists put a $20 billion deal to combine Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines in "serious jeopardy" as the boards of the two companies prepared to meet Wednesday, two people close to talks said.

The people said the pilots unions had agreed on a comprehensive joint contract, but they had been unable to agree on how seniority for the 12,000 pilots would work in a combined carrier. (read more)
